After attending Rumson Fair Haven Regional High School and becoming a member of the National Honor Society, Sam Chandler of Rumson, New Jersey, is attending the Blair Academy. As a supporter of Change A Life Uganda, Sam Chandler volunteered at the St. Lawrence school in Mygiera, Uganda, and also raised $5,000 for its health clinic. Change A Life Uganda’s mission is to help children who are orphans and underprivileged in Uganda by providing education, medical care, and commerce. The organization's vision is that a healthy and educated child can improve the future of Uganda. Education is the keystone of the mission, and the nonprofit helps teachers promote academic excellence from primary school to the university level with a goal of increasing both attendance and graduation rates. Change A Life Uganda also strives to increase the ratio of teachers to students and provide teachers with more training. Less advantaged children receive housing and free tuition, and there is a program to improve adult reading as well, since literate adults are more likely to be involved in the academic pursuits of their children.

A recent high school graduate, Sam Chandler attended Rumson Fair Haven Regional High School where he took a number of honors courses. During his breaks, Sam Chandler of Rumson volunteered all over the world, working at Proyecto Asis animal reserve in Costa Rica and serving a school in Uganda. Based in Costa Rica, Proyecto Asis is an organization that offers volunteer opportunities for those looking to immerse themselves in the culture, learn Spanish, and serve wildlife. There are three primary opportunities through the organization. The first is the Wildlife Rescue Center, where volunteers can learn about native wildlife up close. They help prepare food and clean the cages and also do a number of other tasks, such as building new enclosures or making toys for the animals. Volunteers with an interest in serving a larger population can participate in the service learning program, which blends community service with cultural immersion. These programs vary based on volunteer ages. Finally, those looking to improve their Spanish can participate in the immersion Spanish program, which gives each student semi-private lessons for four hours a day while leaving time each day for exploration outside of the classroom. |
