An active volunteer and dedicated student, Sam Chandler studies at Blair Academy in Blairstown, New Jersey. A former student of Rumson Fair Haven High, he has taken several honors and AP courses and spent hundreds of hours volunteering with various organizations. In his free time, Sam Chandler of Rumson loves surfing. Many individuals think of shark attacks when it comes to surfing injuries, but surfers are actually much more at risk of suffering sprains, dislocations, or cuts while on the water. Although preventing these injuries is for the most part fairly simple, it requires a bit of preparation. When not on the water, surfers should complete conditioning and flexibility exercises. These types of exercises strengthen the body’s joints and can also help to improve overall balance. Meanwhile, surfers should do a thorough body stretch immediately before going out on the ocean. It’s also important that they put on sunscreen and continue to reapply it throughout the day. Surfers can also reduce their risk of injury while on the water by following basic surfing rules. According to the sport's etiquette, surfers should respect one another’s space and give others a chance to catch a wave. Also, only one surfer should ride a wave at a time. Following these rules prevents collisions between surfers. Further, it’s important that surfers keep an eye out for changing weather conditions as well as rocks and reefs in shallow areas. If surfers do fall in these areas, they should keep their body flat and protect their head and face.
